Today is a great new day to decide not to take anything personally. Recognize to what degree you let this habit drive your mood and shape your world. Stay committed to this exercise. There is a profound freedom in it that will nourish your soul.
Don Miguel Ruiz writes in his book The Four Agreements, “whatever happens around you, don’t take it personally.” This is the second of the four agreements. In this wisdom packed little book he goes on to say “even when a situation seems so personal, even if others insult you directly, it has nothing to do with you. What they say, what they do, and the opinions they give are according to the agreements they have in their own minds.” Wow, I love this!
As you feel the emotion of being offended bubble up inside you let it slip like water does from a bird’s feather ever so gently to the ground. Once you agree to take something personally you are actually agreeing to drink the Kool-Aid of another’s unhappiness. Your power and strength dissolve. You can feel it I know. No matter how hard you try to get the world around you to see it your way or be your way you will never ever be at peace. Whatever they say or feel or express is truly not your problem, it’s their problem. A peace filled mind and heart are the breading ground for loving, kind, healthy relationships. The soil of a peace filled mind is rich with ever-present nutrients of faith, hope, trust, confidence, self-assuredness and clarity so very crystal clear nothing is ever out of focus for you.
